Last summer when eBay began to reveal it's aggressive behavior, I reserved the SaintElsewhere domain. It seemed at the time, and has become increasingly obvious, that eBay is determined to "purge" many small sellers, and drive them to other sites or out of business entirely. My original goal was to use SaintElsewhere to list alternate venues and create some type of interactive discussion or resource for these sellers after leaving eBay.
eBay is not known for sharp management but I never dreamed they would mandate such total anarchy! As a result, now, I really don't even know where to start, so, I came up with this idea. Why not just invite these displaced sellers to actually create "Saint Elsewhere" The term has been bandied about the eBay boards for years, has a nice ring to it, and if everyone that is interested can build their own part of it, disagreement about content should be minimal.
Here is how it will work for now:
SaintElsewhere will provide free hosting for anyone interested in the current eBay situation in the form of a folder or subdomain at the saint. There will be no charge, few restrictions, and we will promise continuing availability of your content through January, 2009 (There are no plans for change, but the project needs to have a review date)
Users are encouraged to create an account, then publish content relative to the namesake domain. This gives you a permanent web address for your views and accessibility for surfers and search engines, and it gives the Saint a mix of content to insure continuing interest. (your documents will normally be indexed by the crawlers within a day or two)
Access to your folder is via FTP (file transfer protocol) If you have ever uploaded files to web space provided by your ISP, you may be familiar with this process. FTP can be accomplished using Windows or any of several free client programs. A comparison of client programs is available from WIKI - http://wikipedia.org
